Foreword by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for 1001 Inventions Arabic Book
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, wrote a foreword to a special print run of the popular Arabic title ‘1001 Inventions: Journey to the Golden Age of Muslim Civilisation’.
This special print is set for distribution for educational purposes across the Arab world to encourage reading and create awareness of scientists and scholars from the history of the wider region.
Book Foreword (English translation)
It does not come as a surprise that Muslim civilisation was associated with science since its beginnings. Science formed the basis for its rise and primacy both on the human and knowledge fronts. The Muslim World opened its doors to all forms of knowledge, science and new ideas; welcoming scientists, philosophers and bright minds from all over the world. This openness to the other gifted humanity with a cultural legacy that bear witness to exceptional intellectual advancements.
Men and women scientists from the Golden Age of Muslim civilisation; mathematicians, astronomers, chemists, physicians, architects, engineers, economists, sociologists and artists are role models from history in determination, sense of achievement and devotion to the service of humanity.
Today, we are in desperate need for inspiration by the glory of the past to build the future. The past gives us a positive impetus to induce our energies and abilities to keep pace with the changing world around us, and to inspire the Arab youth to strive to play a central role in the making of the future to serve humanity.
I, therefore, hope that Arab readers would draw on the knowledge to be gained from this book, and be enlightened by the paths of creativity that enriched our history. I am confident that our children shall continue the path of their ancestors and be innovators that keep up with the accelerated pace in which civilisations are built in the modern time.

لم يكن مستغرباً أن تقترن الحضارة الإسلامية، منذ بداياتها، بالعلم وتتخذه أساساً لنهضتها وتفوّقها معرفياً وإنسانياً، حيث كان العالم الإسلامي يفتحُ أبوابَه بترحابٍ لكلّ أنواع المعارف والعلوم والأفكار، مستقبِلاً العلماءَ والفلاسفةَ والعقولَ الفذّةَ من كل بقعةٍ من بقاع الأرض. هذا الانفتاح أهدى للإنسانية موروثاً حضارياً كان شاهداً على تطوراتٍ فكريةٍ وثقافية استثنائية.
إن علماء العصر الذهبي للحضارة الإسلامية، رجالاً ونساء، من رياضيين وفلكيين وكيميائيين وأطباء ومعماريين ومهندسين واقتصاديين وعلماء اجتماع وفنانين، هم أمثلة تاريخية خالدة تعبر عن الإصرار والعزيمة والإنجاز والتفاني في خدمة البشرية.
واليوم نحن في أمس الحاجة لنستلهم أمجاد الماضي في سبيل بناء المستقبل، ليعطينا دفعة إيجابيةً تشحذ طاقاتنا وقدراتنا لمواكبة التغيرات المحيطة بنا، ولتحفّز أجيالنا العربية الناشئة وتوقظ فيهم روحاً تستشرف بناء المستقبل وتلعب دوراً محورياً في صناعته لخدمة الإنسانية جمعاء. ولذا، فإني أطمح أن يتمكن القارئ العربي من استقاء المعرفة من هذا الكتاب، والاستنارة بدروب الإبداع التي أثْرت تاريخنا، وأنا على ثقة، أيضاً، بأبنائنا أن يواصلوا المسيرة كي يكونوا مبدعين فاعلين ومواكبين للوتيرة المتسارعة التي تبنى بها الحضارة في عصرنا الحالي.
