1001 Inventions Arabic Book Special Print Run in Celebration of the Jordan Year of Science 2017
On the occasion of the launch of the 1001 Inventions Arabic Science Exhibition in Amman in November 2017, a special limited print run of the Arabic version of the popular book ‘1001 Inventions: Journey to the Golden Age of Muslim Civilisation’ with forward by Her Majesty Queen Rania was organised by the Royal Scientific Society.
The Royal Scientific Society, headed by HRH Princess Sumaya bint Al-Hassan, organised a year-long celebration of science in Jordan: The Jordan Year of Science 2017. Two 1001 Inventions exhibitions; Ibn Al-Haytham: The Man Who Discovered How We see, and 1001 Inventions Arabic Science were part of this celebration.

Look around; the legacy of the Golden Age of Islam is everywhere – from the humble cup of coffee, everyday soap and botanical gardens…to surgical instruments, astrological devices, algebra, and so much more.
Whether they are nourishing our souls with bold and striking aesthetics or challenging our intellectual development with scientific theories and discoveries, these innovations endure to this day – testament to the proud and productive history of ancient Muslim civilisation. This is what the 1001 Inventions Exhibition celebrates.
But as it looks back to showcase the breakthroughs and scholarly achievements of this bygone era, so, too, does it urge us all to look forward to the challenges of today. Each exhibit and its message therein is a reminder of the fortitude of the human spirit. So, to me, the power of this collection lies in its ability to inspire people of all backgrounds, religions, and cultures to come together – and think together – to develop solutions to the most pressing issues of our time.
As technology’s tools help us to channel the spirit of those who have gone before, we are better able to connect and collaborate with those beyond our borders.
For if we have learned anything from the Golden Age of Islam, it is that the spirit of tolerance and coexistence that characterised our forbearers enabled science and research to flourish – and, thus, humanity to advance. Our world needs that same spirit today. If we are to overcome the ravages of disease, conflict, and climate change that wreak havoc on the most vulnerable segments of society; if we are to strengthen our societies; and if we are to build sustainable futures for our children, we must think anew. This exhibition helps us to do that, as it reminds us that, for progress and prosperity to be shared by all, they must be pioneered by all.
It is my hope that the 1001 Inventions exhibition will help to reignite the spirit of discovery and thirst for achievement that defined our storied past and, in doing so, pave the way for a future of peace and enlightenment. We owe our children nothing less.

ما إن تنظر من حولك؛ حتى تجد نفسك محاطاً بإرث العصر الإسلامي الذهبي، بما أضاف علماؤنا إلى البشرية والأساسات التي وضعوها للعلوم والرياضيات والطب والفلك، وشكلت نواة الكثير من الاختراعات والإنجازات العالمية.
هذا هو ما يحتفل به معرض ألف اختراع واختراع.
فسواء كانت هذه الابتكارات تُّتع حواسنا بجماليات جريئة ومذهلة؛ أو تتحدى آفاقنا الفكرية والعلمية بالنظريات والاكتشافات، فهي بالتأكيد شهادة على تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية المثمر، وتذكير على أن العلوم تراكمية؛ وتطورها والإضافة لها قد يأتي من أي مكان وعلى يد أي مجتهد. وكلي أمل بأن نعيد زمن الاجتهاد العلمي في أوطاننا العربية وأن نضيف باستمرار للبناء الحضاري العالمي.
إن الفخر بتاريخنا يضعنا أمام مسؤولية إعادة أمجادنا، بل والتغلب على التحديات التي تواجهنا بالتواصل والابتكار. ولم تكن أدوات التواصل متاحة أكثر في يوم؛ ولا حرية الابتكار أعلى سقفاً من عصرنا هذا. ما نحتاج إليه هو المسؤولية والإرادة.
أوليست الحاجة أم الاختراع؟
لقد رأينا عبر العصور كيف تزدهر العلوم والفنون في بيئة متعايشة تضع البناء أولوية. وعالمنا اليوم يحتاج إلى إرادة جماعية للتعايش والبناء إذا أردنا أن نتغلب على ويلات النزاعات والمرض وتغير المناخ الذي يدمر أكثر شرائح المجتمع ضعفاً. إذا أردنا أن نعزز مجتمعاتنا؛ وإذا أردنا بناء مستقبل مستدام لأطفالنا، يجب أن نغير أولوياتنا.
وكلي أمل أن يساعد معرض ألف اختراع واختراع على إشعال فتيل الفضول والإرادة والثقة بالقدرات التي اتسم بها ماضينا لنعيش حقبة سلام وتنوير… فنحن مدينون لأطفالنا وأجيالنا القادمة بذلك.
