Library of Alexandria Announces Partnership with 1001 Inventions

1001 Inventions and the Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), Egypt have agreed to work together.

Alexandria, 13th November 2014: Egypt’s world-famous Library of Alexandria and the global 1001 Inventions organisation have announced a four-year partnership agreement as part of a national educational programme in Egypt to raise awareness and celebrate the unappreciated history of science and technology in Muslim Civilisation.

1001 Inventions and the Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina) have agreed to work together on a series of initiatives, based around the award-winning educational work of 1001 Inventions, to inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and medicine and build their capacity towards building a better future for the country.

The partnership agreement has been facilitated by the Prime Minister of Egypt who recently met with representatives of both organisations to discuss a national programme to popularize the work of 1001 Inventions throughout Egypt.

Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Director, Library of Alexandria, said: “Egypt has a history of academic excellence going back millennia, and the passion this nation has for education continues to this day. This important and worthy partnership with the international organisation 1001 Inventions, will further support the efforts of the Library of Alexandria to promote science and technology among school students and the public at large, and to show their relevance to everyday life.”

The four-year collaboration will include touring interactive exhibitions, hands-on workshops, educational films, live shows and teaching resources, all of which will be provided in Arabic as well as English.

The New Library of Alexandria is dedicated to recapture the spirit of openness and scholarship of the original Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina will be handling the 1001 Inventions programme through its Planetarium Science Center (PSC). It is a not-for-profit edutainment center dedicated to increasing the public’s understanding and appreciation of science, technology and mathematics through hands-on activities, planetarium shows and interactive exhibits. The moto of the centre is “Science for All”, which summarises the aims to serve and reach out to a broader spectrum of society, to introduce the public to the marvels of Science and its applications in everyday life.

About Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina aims to be: A center of excellence in the production and dissemination of knowledge and to be a place of dialogue, learning and understanding between cultures and peoples. The Planetarium Science Center (PSC) is considered one of the leading Egyptian informal education organization. It is a hands-on complex designed to stimulate human imagination and innovation through science and technology activities and workshops.

The PSC has developed an assorted bouquet of programs that are of international standard and nationally adapted. Examples are the Summer Program, School Year Program, Robotics Program, Chess Program, Amateurs Astronomy Club, Can Sat Program, and others. All of which involve practically  experiencing the various scientific topics. Also, most of these programs are associated with scientific competitions or complementary events.

On the national level, the PSC utilizes the Annual Events to reach the various public sectors and intrigue them to be involved in science. Moreover, the center launched the Science Clubs Initiative, a long term dissemination program, where the PSC establishes activities halls in public schools for various science and culture hands-on activities, and conducts teachers training sessions.
