1001 Meals team raises children’s awareness about the importance of washing hands to stay healthy
29 February 2020 – 1001 Meals programme is serving an added purpose this winter. As harsh weather conditions make the situation in the Zaatari refugee camp more difficult, the 1001 Meal programme activities help motivate children to attend school and bring warmth to their classrooms.
Week after week, during this winter season, dozens of eager students across different grade levels and at a number of refugee camp schools file into the classroom where the exciting 1001 Meals programme runs.
During this round of the Programme, the 1001 Meals team is paying special attention to raising the students’ awareness about the importance of hygiene and washing their hands to stay healthy.
As students enter the 1001 Meals designated classroom at schools, they are all offered alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Before beginning the 1001 Inventions science activities the team explains the importance of washing hands with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds. The team then starts singing to the tunes of a well-known Arabic song to help the children remember how important it is to wash their hands before eating their Healthy Meals provided by World Food Programme and regularly throughout the day.
The 1001 Meals initiative is a partnership between the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and 1001 Inventions organisation. It aims to inspire creativity, curiosity and hope among refugee children deprived of crucial opportunities for meaningful engagement to support their physical, emotional and intellectual wellbeing.
1001 Meals team transform makeshift classrooms, originally with no electricity, into an inspiring space for the children to enjoy an exciting educational experience. Thousands of children are introduced to stories of lesser-known pioneers from a historical golden age of science and innovation that occurred in the Middle East.
