MOSH and 1001 Inventions organise an educational day

On August 5 2017, the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) in Jacksonville, Florida organised an educational day in partnership with 1001 Inventions to celebrate the scientific and cultural contributions of pioneers from Muslim Civilisation. The event was organised in collaboration with the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens exhibition “Ink, Silk and Gold: Islamic Treasures from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston”.

Paul Bourcier, Curator of MOSH said:

It’s important for people to know that, throughout history, people from all different cultural backgrounds have made important contributions to the world in which we live. These cultures still exist today, and they’re here in Jacksonville. Whether your interest is in gardens, games, fabrics, fashions, clocks, cameras, medicine, math, languages, art, astronomy or geography, you’ll find something fascinating in this show.”

Hanan Dowidar, 1001 Inventions Head of Strategic Partnerships said:

We are delighted to partner with the Museum of Science & History to present engaging experiences to celebrate scientific achievements from the Golden Age of Muslim Civilisation that still influence our world today. 1001 Inventions aims to collaborate with schools, museums, and educational organisations around the world to help spark children’s interest in science while promoting diversity and intercultural appreciation.”

Throughout the day MOSH science explainers performed diverse experiments themed on the scientific contributions of pioneers from Muslim Civilisation. Participating children and families also enjoyed hands-on workshops to explore the scientific inquiry and advancements during the Golden Age of Muslim Civilisation.

Also on August 14 the MOSH invited Professor Charles Falco to deliver a talk titled “Vision into Muslim Culture & Inventions: Ibn al-Haytham”. The lecture by Professor Falco aimed to take participants on a journey to better understand theories of vision, light and optics from the Golden Age of Muslim Civilisation to modern period.  Professor Falco shed light on Ibn al-Haytham, the 11th century inventor, philosopher and thinker from Arabia, and his contributions to modern science and technology.
