Manchester Central Library to Host 1001 Inventions

Free Event Celebrating UK Chemistry Week

Manchester Science Festival
Manchester Central Library

Join 1001 Inventions at the iconic Manchester Central Library for “1001 Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry”

The event will run from October 30th to November 4th and celebrate Chemistry Week.

Follow in the footsteps of 8th-century alchemist Jabir ibn Hayyan through a short animated film, on-stage demonstrations and engaging hands-on workshops.

An exciting range of activities will help visitors unravel mysteries from the science of chemistry, introduce its applications and discover the contributions made to science by some of its lesser-known pioneers.

Families, schools and homeschooling groups are invited to join this FREE event at Manchester Central Library for a fun-filled journey of learning.

This event is made possible through the generous support of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Event sponsored by the Ernest Solvay Fund, administered by the King Baudouin Foundation.

The event is organised as part of the successful “1001 Inventions: Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry” educational initiative, launched in partnership with UNESCO, to celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT2019). The global educational initiative was launched at UNESCO HQ in Paris in January 2019 and was then featured at the China Science FestivalAll-Russian Science FestivalBerlin Science Week, the Royal Society of Chemistry in London and the Maker Faire Cairo in Egypt. The initiative continues to help inspire a future generation of chemists while promoting diversity and intercultural appreciation online and through global events in partnership with museums, science centres, festivals, schools, and libraries.

About Manchester Central Library

Central Library is the city’s main library and information service. Situated just off St Peter’s Square, this iconic city venue, designed by E. Vincent Harris, was first opened in 1934. Following a £50m refurbishment in 2010, taking four years, the Grade II listed building has been brought into the 21st century by combining historic features with cutting-edge design. Most of our events take place in the Archives+ area on the ground floor and the performance space on the ground floor.
