1001 Meals Story

Issam and Hana’ are two of the Syrian team members who have been part of the 1001 Meals implementation team at the Zaatari refugee camp since the Programme first launched in April 2019. Both have found that among the most beneficial aspects of the Programme is that it helps improve the wellbeing of children and adults alike through the inspiring stories presented.

Like most Syrians in the Zaatari camp, Issam and Hana’ are from Daraa and have been in the Zaatari camp for 8 and 7 years respectively. Issam is the father of two children aged two and three years old.

We are refugees here and there’s no joy, but we feel happy when we see the children excited with the 1001 Meals activities,” Issam says.

Meanwhile, Hana’ remarks that children find the Ibn al-Haytham film screening at the refugee camp to be particularly memorable.

The children have never seen a cinema before. They feel like it’s a new experience, something they will never forget. When they return home, they talk about it to their families and what they saw and how fun it was.”

For Issam, the experience is even more meaningful as it is the first time he learns about Ibn al-Haytham.

I left school in the fourth grade,” he explains. “Ibn al-Haytham taught me that there’s no such thing as failure. You have to get failure out of your head and keep trying until you succeed.”

The 1001 Meals initiative, is a partnership between the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and 1001 Inventions organisation. It aims to inspire creativity, curiosity and hope among refugee children deprived of crucial opportunities for meaningful engagement to support their physical, emotional and intellectual wellbeing.
1001 Meals team transform makeshift classrooms, originally with no electricity, into an inspiring space for the children to enjoy an exciting educational experience. Thousands of children are introduced to stories of lesser-known pioneers from a historical golden age of science and innovation that occurred in the Middle East.
