“…As a student of history, I also know civilisation's debt to Islam. It was Islam – at places like Al-Azhar University*1 – that carried the light of learning*1a through so many centuries, paving the way*1b for Europe's Renaissance*2 and Enlightenment. It was innovation*3 in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra*4; our magnetic compass*5 and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing*6; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed*7. Islamic culture has given us majestic arches and soaring spires*8; timeless poetry and cherished music*9; elegant calligraphy*10 and places of peaceful contemplation*11. And throughout history, Islam has demonstrated through words and deeds the possibilities of religious tolerance*12 and racial equality…”
